If you’ve never tried fly fishing for sea-run trout, you're basically fly fishing for a form of brown trout that spends much of its life in saltwater, usually in estuaries and bays.

Although your chances of hooking up with a sea trout are obviously better in freshwater rivers and lakes, where anglers spend most of their time fly fishing.

But in the ocean is where the sea trout flaunts its beautiful coloring, like a steelhead showcasing bright silver sides but adding the brown back flecked with dark spots.

While in freshwater, the contrast in color darkens considerably.

UK Sea Trout

The sea trout is probably most popular in the UK, where it considered as good a game fish as the salmon and can be found in a number of waters. The sea trout is also a more sought-after game fish because it is more prevalent in its native Europe.

Some of the most popular waters in England, include: Fowey, Camel, Itchen, Wear, Coquet, Tyne, Till, Eden, Dart, Sussex Ouse, Teign and Ribble.

In Scotland, sea trout can be found in Tweed, Teviot, Spey, Border Esk, Annan, Deveron, Findhorn, Nith, Alness, Eachaig and Don.

In Wales, sea trout can be caught at Teifi, Towy, Cothi, Dee, Taff, Rheidol, Ystwyth, Neath and Ogmore, Dyfi, Conway and Mawddach.

Sea Trout Size

Because the species is a sea-run fish, sea-run trout can grow rather large. In fact, sea trout in the double-digit range are often caught by anglers and make headlines across the globe. In Pantagonia, for example, fish up to 30 pounds have been taken on a fly.

Sea Trout Flies

Some of the most popular flies are some of the typical trout flies you’d expect.

A hare’s ear nymph, serendipity, coachman, bi-visible and daddy longlegs in your box should be enough to get you going.

For bigger sea trout, try a streamer and presentation that resembles an injured baitfish.

Where to Find Sea Trout

Like most salmonids, the sea-run trout is constantly moving and in need of high-oxygenated water. So you’ll usually find them in the coldest, cleanest water you can find.

Sea Trout are native to Europe, but because they earned the reputation as superb game fish, they were successfully introduced from North America to South America, as well as Japan, India, Australia, New Zealand and parts of Africa.

Along the East Coast, sea trout can now be found running on a number of rivers from Newfoundland to New Jersey.
