Fly Fishing in Cleveland: Cavs GM Danny Ferry Sheds Light on Cleveland Fishing

Fly Fishing on Rocky River, Lake Erie, Wallace Lake, Ledge Lake, Chagrin River

It’s no secret athletes like to fly fish, I’ve written about this a handful of times on About.com.

But I haven’t written about many NBA players who like to fly fishing in their down time.

That was until I heard Cleveland Cavaliers general manager and former player Danny Ferry enjoys the push and pull of the fly line.

In a recent Q&A on Cleveland.com, Ferry says if he had a day all to himself, he’d spend it fly fishing:

“Off the top of my head, I would like to go fly fishing again,” he said. “I have fly fished on vacation a bunch, but last year I went here in town. … I have lived here for almost 15 years now and did not know you could fly-fish in Cleveland. I am really looking forward to getting out there again.”

While Cleveland isn’t known for its fly fishing, it just goes to show there are fly fishing opportunities all around us. Just make sure the water you’re fishing is legal.

In fact, I even had a chance to fish the Rocky River near Cleveland on a business trip there many years ago and I seem to a few upclose glimpses of some nice-sized smallmouth bass.

And, it’s worth noting, the Rocky River was named one of the “150 best places to fish in America” in the June 2007 issue of Field and Stream magazine, so maybe Cleveland fly fishing is more popular than many of us (including Ferry) think.

And with Lake Erie, Wallace Lake, Ledge Lake and Chagrin River nearby, the possibilities there’s a large array of fish to choose from in the Cleveland region of the Buckeye State.
