This is allows alternatives in the unlikely event you don't catch anything on the Truckee, although that rarely happens around these parts.
Fish Species at the Truckee
The Truckee is a fun river in part because you can catch a number of species of trout, including everything from rainbows, browns, cutthroat and brookies, to whitefish and kokanee.
The season is typically open from the last Saturday in April to mid-November.
Check both California and Nevada fishing regulations prior to fishing the Lake Tahoe area.
Techniques for Fishing the Truckee
Another great quality of the Truckee is access. The river runs along Interstate 80 and Highway 89 with no shortage of turnouts along the way.
Check with local fly shops to get the best patterns for the particular stretch of water you will be fishing.
If no shops are available, fish the Truckee like you would your basic High Sierra trout stream, taking note of all the runs and riffles.
Try little yellow stones, midges and elk hair caddis.
This is part of a series on fly fishing near Lake Tahoe and the Nevada-California state line.
