Stampede Reservoir is one of three reservoirs that make up the Truckee River drainage system and is one of the favorite Lake Tahoe-area fisheries among local fly fishermen for a number of reasons.
Stampede, like Lake Tahoe, has a decent number of kokanee, which can be found in the shallows in the late spring, early summer.
Techniques for Fishing Stampede Reservoir
Try nymphs and larvae imitations along with the other bugs you can find at beyond 5,800 feet.
The Little Truckee River flows into the Stampede from the west, along with Sagehen Creek, which can make for good fishing if flows are up.
There is a dam located on the east side of the reservoir, where some big fish (possibly even some whopper lake trout) have been known to hang out.
How to get to Stampede Reservoir
The lake is accessible via Interstate 80 or Highway 89 north of Truckee, Calif.
Like the other lakes in the region, it has camping available on the north and south shores.
This is part of a series on fly fishing near Lake Tahoe and the Nevada-California state line.
