Founded in 1992, Redington, based in Bainbridge Island, Wash., is a relative newcomer when it comes to the fly rod makers on our top 10 list.
But Redington also better understands the new generation of angler better than many rod makers, and gears its fly rods to that audience, which is why it’s helped so many anglers set world records in recent years.
Ready to Fish Outfits
Redington’s Ready to Fish Outfits, for example, are becoming hugely popular to newcomers to the sport because all you need is a fly to start fishing with these made-to-fish rods.
Powered with a Rio Mainstream fly lines, these combos are ready to fish right out of the box.
One of my favorite fly rods I've reviewed on this site is the Redington Crosswater fly fishing rod and reel combo($119.95), one of the best fly rod and reel combos for beginners because it’s a Redington quality rod that’s also inexpensive and ready to fish right out of the box.
And by out of the box, I mean it’s already preschooled with backing, fly line and leader to match the weight of the rod you’ve purchased.
Redington has also added the following rods to its lineup:
Classic Trout (CT) Series
These classic, medium-action 4- and 6-piece fly rods (MSRP $129-180) are geared toward traditional anglers and are versatile enough to be fished on the tiniest of creeks to the widest of rivers.
The 10-rod family is made up of eight rods in the 4-piece configuration, ranging from ultra-light 7’6” 2-weight up through a 9’ 6-weight. Also included are two 6-piece travel rods.
The Minnow
As the name suggests, these easy-casting combo rods are made for novice anglers ages six or older.
The two-piece rods are medium action, 5/6-weight with durable Crosswater 4/5/6 reels preloaded with backing, weight-forward fly line, and a knotless leader. Just add a fly and these outfits are ready to fish.
The Minnows (only $99 at Sears.com) include fun casting games, targets and instructions on how to teach children to fish, cast and tie knots.
10-Foot Sticks
Redington has also introduced 10-foot models to its lineup.
The double-digit rods have been added to the CPX and RS4 rod families as 5- and 6-weight, four-piece setups.
These lightweight rods are made for nymphing, float tubing, and casting large dries for large trout, allowing anglers to cover more water when high sticking or roll casting with wide swings.
Conservation efforts
Redington is a sponsor of Trout Unlimited, Federation of Fly Fishers, Take Me Fishing and the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation’s Angler’s Legacy programs.
The company has also fought mine development in Southwest Alaska's Bristol Bay, which according to Redington, is an “area where the wilds of nature provide sustenance and life to a region dependent on fisheries.”
