The oldest mail order company in the U.S., already known for its waders and outdoor apparel, has also made a name for itself in terms of world record breaking fly rods.
In fact, anglers have landed 23 world records with Orvis fly rods, according to the 2009 International Game Fish Association’s World Record Game Fishes book.
New Fly Rods by Orvis
The future is now for the Orvis’ ZG Zero Gravity Helios fly rod series, named “Best of the Best” by Field & Stream magazine the past two years.
The magazine notes that the Helios saw “10-to20-foot distance gains unfurl within a few casts for almost everyone. A 5-weight feels like a 3-weight; a 10-weight feels like an 8-weight. In the end, we were convinced you get what you pay for, and we couldn’t quite say that about some other rods.”
What you pay, however, is the catch. The rod costs $755 (make that $800 if you want it personally engraved). According to Orvis, the ZG Helio uses “exclusive thermoset thermosplastic resin technology combined with an all-new steeper taper” to create one of lightest and most technologically advanced rods around.
