Web Resources for Anglers on a Budget

By Brian Milne, About.com

Fishing is the greatest hobby in the world. It can also be one of the priciest with 40 million Americans spending more than $40 billion in retail sales, according to the American Sportfishing Association. And fly anglers know their addiction costs even more with reels and rods costing hundreds of dollars apiece. Luckily most fly anglers have deep pockets or are penny pinchers who have nothing else to do but fly fish. The following is an ongoing list of my best-buy links for the latter:

1. Cabela's Bargain Cave

Cabela's, the "World's Foremost Outfitter," is often the first site fly anglers turn to when they need to upgrade their fly rod or reel because of their extensive selection of gear. Cabela's Bargain Cave is chalked full with quality overstocked items that are discounted up to 70 percent. The content usually changes weekly.

2. Bass Pro Shops Clearance Site

Bass Pro Shops, the "World's Leading Supplier of Premium Outdoor Gear," is known best for its bass fishing gear, although there's plenty here for fly fishermen as well. The clearance page has all sorts of outdoors items and occasional deals on fly fishing gear.

3. Orvis Sale Outlet

Another popular outfitter for fly fishers, the Orvis Sale Outlet lists more than 1,500 items at sale prices over 80 percent in some cases. Orvis' "Giant Tackle Clearance Sale" includes discounted rods, reels and waders.

4. Fogdog Outlet

Fogdog is a general sporting goods store that has a small assortment of fly fishing gear. Fogdog's outlet page has rods, reels and tackle at discounted prices along with reduced shipping rates.

5. Overstock Fishing Site

Overstock.com is an online outlet store that sells everything from furniture to electronics, so don't expect a ton of fly fishing gear here. The site, however, has an occasional deal on beginner fly fishing rod and reel combos.
