Why Politics and Fishing Don't Mix
Minnesota senator Satveer Chaudhary recently proposed moving the walleye fishing opener up a week in May because it conflicted with Mother’s Day weekend.
“Not only would moving the opener up by one week avoid the conflict with Mother’s Day, it makes sense biologically, as the fish spawn is happening earlier due to the effects of climate change,” he said in a statement.
The proposal, however, hit a snag March 14 when officials pointed out that moving the opener up a week would actually conflict with Mother’s Day more often than the current date. Mother’s Day, for Chaudhary and others who don’t realize it, bounces around on the calendar each year because the holiday must land on a Sunday. (Even I knew that, then again my daughter was born on Mother’s Day, so I guess that’s cheating.)
