Imagine losing your footing while fly fishing Lester River and getting swept into frigid Lake Superior.
Then, imagine losing your prized, $800 Orvis fly rod along the way.
That's what happened to Duluth Angler Paul Kosmatka on March 17, rescued by a small motorboat and a group of firefighters before having to be takento the hospital.
A day later, Kosmatka was out of the hospital and, as unbelievable as it may seem, reunited with his trusty fly rod - recovered by another angler who snagged the Orvis rod with his Rapala while trolling Lake Superior.
Now that's a fish tale. DuluthNewsTribune.com
Fishing the snow melt
Springtime anglers may reap the rewards of this past winter's record-setting snowfall. With opening day of trout season slated for Saturday in the southeast counties and April 17 elsewhere in the state, snow melt should keep most streams recharged and cold at least through early May. Finger Lake tributary fishing means big 'bows on opening day
Year after year, the biggest trout caught on opening day in Central New York come from one of the Finger Lake tributaries. Every April 1, streams such as Grout Brook, Catharine Creek, the Cayuga Lake Inlet and the Owasco Lake Inlet draw so many anglers that there's often shoulder-to-shoulder fishing in certain spots. The reason is the Finger Lake tributaries this time of year boast spawning rainbow trout, many in the 20- to 29-inch range. Syracuse.com
It's trout time, at last
It is finally time to kick off the 2010 trout season. As "Gramps" so aptly coined it, the "Charge of the Ultra-Light Brigade" is about to commence. DailyItem.com
California Super Hatches
I still distinctly remember my dad flipping out live grasshoppers from the edge of the stream and watching trout dash out from undercut banks to inhale them. This piqued my interest and nurtured an early preference for visually stimulating fishing. Flyfisherman.com
Scout For Trout
Reading a stream enables an angler to find fish by skill, not chance. It can also be argued that nowhere is reading more important than in springtime trout waters. GameAndFishMag.com
