In a previous post, I wrote about Forbes.com’s list of North America’s Top 10 Trout-Fishing Towns.
The Forbes list included: Redding, Calif.; Calgary, Alberta; Asheville, N.C.; Glenwood Springs, Colo.; State College, Pa.; Mountain Home, Ark.; Grayling, Mich.; Roscoe, N.Y.; Missoula, Mont.; and West Yellowstone, Mont.
While there were a few other towns that easily could have made the list, it was a tough list to argue with.
But I’m sure the folks in, say, Bend, Ore., Minocqua, Wis., Apalachicola, Fla., and Nantucket, Mass., would have something to say about that.
So where’s your favorite place to fly fish? Share your thoughts on our Readers’ Favorite Fishing Destinations Page.

Gee, only one Canadian “town” listed! I’d have to say that I think my town even beats the city of Calgary. Orangeville, Ontario is located near the headwaters of:
1. The Credit River
2. The Humber River
3. The Grand River
4. The Nottawasaga River
5. The Pine River
The top four above are all within 20 minute drive of me and have very nice – and high quality – fly fishing opportunities for brown trout, brook trout, smallmouth bass, carp, and pike.
The Pine is a little further, but not too much.
As well, we’ve got Island Lake (formerly Orangeville Reservoir) which can be fly fished for smallmouth bass, pike, and crappie – five minutes from downtown.
And then there is Lake Bellwood, formed by the Shand Dam on the Grand – it’s 20 minutes away, and can be fly fished for pike, smallmouth bass, and others.
There are also a couple of private clubs in the area that are not very expensive, such as Humber Springs, which has some awesome rainbows in their ponds. Hooked into one yesterday that broke my 8 lb test leader while fishing chironomids.
And I’m probably forgetting some places, too! So.. yes, I’d have to say Orangeville, Ontario is a pretty good place to be for a fly angler.
