Fishing for Black Friday deals

I get the question around Turkey Day every year. “Hey, my wife’s going shopping on Friday, wanna go fishing?”

Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is traditionally known by shopaholics as Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year. It’s the day when stores open their doors at 4 a.m. and red-eyed shoppers cash in on some of the best sales of the year.

And believe it or not, I might actually take a pass on the fishing trip Friday to get in some shopping of my own. You heard right, that guy who hikes for miles to fish as far away from civilization as possible is going shopping on Black Friday.

But I’m not about to deal with the crowds, in fact, I might even shop in my boxers Friday morning – from the comfort of my own couch. What many Black Friday shoppers don’t realize is that you can get many of the same deals on the Web without having to wrestle the crowds and wait in never-ending lines.

As always, be sure to support your local fly shop if you have one and see if they're opening up early or going fishing on Friday. If they're “Gone Fishing,” get your stuff online early and you might just be able to join them on the stream in time for the afternoon hatch.
