Tips of the Week: Get Away

Saturday August 30, 2008
I've started up another occasional "series" if you will on useful fly fishing tips this summer, to help you get the most out of your last few fishing adventures before the fall. Here's the latest of the tips, which I'll try to post on a weekly basis:

Get away from the crowds. Fly fishing is a solitary hobby, and the fishing is always better when there’s less pressure.

While the honey holes may have more fish (likely stocked), the upper stretches hold the wild and holdover fish that actually prefer flies over bait — unlike stocked fish that are raised on pellets in tanks far, far away.

If you get away from the crowds and the stocked fish, you'll catch more fish on flies and have a better chance of catching a wild species that fights unlike any of those stockers you'll come across downstream.
