Tip of the Week: Local Flavor

Saturday August 23, 2008
I've started up another occasional "series" if you will on useful fly fishing tips this summer, to help you get the most out of your last few fishing adventures before the fall. Here's the latest of the tips, which I'll try to post on a weekly basis:

Hang with the locals. There’s no better place to learn the ins and outs of a fishery than from local guides and fly shops.

Use this resource as often as possible and be sure to spend a few bucks on locally made flies, all of which could lead to more guide-offered tips for your next trip.

When I’m fishing a new water, I always stop in the local fly shop, buy a shirt or hat and stock up on a dozen of the local fly selections recommended by the resident guide.

That approach always seems to help me find fish in a hurry and usually makes for an amazing time on the water.
