Searching for August steelhead in Idaho

Wednesday August 20, 2008
The Clearwater River near Lewiston, Idaho, is one of state’s best steelhead rivers, holding double-digit steelies that fight like steers.

The steelhead season typically kicks off for the bigger fish in late August, when steelhead enter the system after spending a couple years at sea. They can typically be found in the lower third of the river. The Clearwater also holds some rainbow and cutthroat trout, although steelhead are the main draw here.

I’ve always wanted to try steelhead fishing. And I travel to Idaho every september…..but I just can’t bring myself to go for the steelies. The dry fly fishing for cutthroat trout is just too incredible on the Lochsa and Selway, east of Kooskia, that time of year! There’s a (sometimes) insane giant caddis hatch up there near the end of September, and great public access all the way up the Selway and all the way up the Lochsa.

I’m going again this year! Maybe sometime I’ll try for steelies — but this year again the fat and powerful Lochsa cuttys are calling me.
