Tip of the Week: Wind Factor

Saturday August 16, 2008
I've started up another occasional "series" if you will on useful fly fishing tips this summer, to help you get the most out of your last few fishing adventures before the fall. Here's the latest of the tips, which I'll try to post on a weekly basis:

Avoid the wind. Wind can be a fisherman’s worst enemy, unless of course they’re casting 50 or 60 yards with a little help from Mother Nature.

In most other cases, wind seriously alters casting accuracy.

To avoid the wind, fish early in the morning and in the evening when it’s less windy.

That’s also when fish, and the bugs they chase, are more active.

If you find yourself casting in the wind midday, try to fish with the wind at your back and make the most of tailwind.

Thank you for this enlightening post, Brian. The next time I find myself casting in the wind midday — and let’s face it, this happens to me all the time — you can be sure I’ll remember this helpful post.
