You’ve heard of catch and release. How about release and catch?

That’s what fisheries biologist Bill Wengert pulled off on a recent ice fishing trip, according to the the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

Wengert was ice fishing Flaming Gorge Reservoir in Southwest Wyoming earlier this year when he caught a 23-inch lake trout, whose right pelvic fin had been clipped, indicating it was likely a fish he helped stock in April 1983, making the fish more than 25 years old.

“What is really amazing about this whole event is that, from my perspective, I may have actually clipped the fins on this very fish,” Wengert said.
