Catch That First Fish of 2008
Still looking for that first fish of the new year?
I’m sorry to say I am.
I was hoping to get in some fishing during a week-long vacation through the Grand Canyon down into Flagstaff, Ariz., but it was so cold most of the rivers out there had frozen over.
In fact, I never even broke out the fly rod all week.
My goal in coming weeks is to find a California warm-water fishery and get that skunk off my back.
If you’re looking for your first fish of 2008, there are plenty of fisheries that have avoided the rash of Mother Nature, including the American, Yuba and Merced rivers in California. You can also try your hand at fly fishing for saltwater species, including surfperch.

You should check out the 2008 Fly Fishing Film Tour. I am sure it is coming to a city near you soon. If catching a fish is out, catch the films!
Yup last Thursday I went to our local Wal-Mart for some shopping on payday. While there my wife and I decided to get our fishin’ license for the year. The old guy kept screwing it all up so bad then my wife discovered he was trying to sell us last years trout stamps that we decided “Forget” it”. On the way home the car threw the timing belt. Cost nothing to get it home but the next day had to go back into Carson and get a big ol’ Mercury Marquis titled and register so my fishin’ money went bye bye. We are supposed to get a government rebate back, when we do I’ll have to put all that into the broken car as it gets so much better gas mileage. So I may not be able to fish this year again, oh well, something I’m getting used, Al
