Many anglers don't realize you can fish on some old military bases across the country. I live within casting distance of two bases at
Camp Roberts and
Fort Hunter Liggett in Central California. They don't look like the best places in the world to cast a fly, but if you look past the bunkers, barbed wire and tanks nicknamed “The Widowmaker,” you’ll find the fishing on these forgotten-about bases can be an extraordinary experience. Here's a profile I wrote on fishing the
Nacimiento River at Camp Roberts and what restrictions civilians must follow. More and more bases are opening up to civilian anglers on the weekends. It just takes a little research to find them.
